Anyway, this year I'm thankful that it's not 2007!!
Our Thanksgiving morning started at 2 a.m. I awoke to the sound of someone getting sick in the kids’ room. As I was preparing to get up to see who was sick, Anarosa came into our room to tell us that Jacob was throwing up. Of course as soon as she got that much out, she promptly threw up on our bed. Well, that began a long night.
I finally got Anarosa and Jacob cleaned up and settled in the living room with blankets and bowls. It wasn’t much use trying to go back to sleep, they were both sick several more times that night, so we all just watched all-night cartoons. At about seven-o-clock in the morning someone was knocking at our door. They wanted to know if we knew about the flood in back. The Flood! Yes, that’s right the entire back of the apartment complex was flooded in about a foot and a half of water. Apparently one of the irrigation pipes had burst in the night.
Now, the regular managers were naturally out of town, this being Thanksgiving, so it was now our problem. We called the owner, Roto-Rooter and just about anyone else we could think of. They all came out and started working on the pipes. Of course the water to the entire apartment complex had to be turned off. Naturally the kids are still throwing up. There is no running water to give them baths. The water is turned off to the complex, so there is no water to wash clothes or blankets in the laundry room either, and since it is Thanksgiving Day there are no laundromats open in the entire city (we checked). Luckily we had a good supply of bottled water in our emergency kit, so we could sponge people down to clean them off. Of course we won’t even mention the bathroom situation, or our happy neighbors who seemed to hold us personally responsible for the mess.
Well, in the afternoon Mark made arrangements with the bishop and everyone else to open the Church building across the street to the tenants, so they could at least use the restrooms there. The missionaries agreed to stay in the church and host. I took Anarosa over a little later on to use the bathroom. Of course when she walked in the women’s bathroom it was flooded too!! At this point I decided that God was making fun of me. That was the only logical explanation for that!
We called everyone who needed to be called for that emergency and went back home! Needless to say we skipped the typical Thanksgiving Dinner at our friends’ house this year. I ended up going over at about 10:00 that night to do a loud of laundry (Jacob had thrown up on the very last piece of clean linen that we had in the house) We kept thinking that the water would be turned on soon, but they ended up having to take out the walkways in back to get to the pipe. The water didn’t come back on until 4pm the next day!

i remember that thanksgiving. I remember having jim being over there. joe and i are sitting here reading this post together and so i asked him if he ever heard you guys mention/complain about your situation. he said no. wow. to have sick, throwing up sick, kids and no running water, and no complaining? major good karma your way. i can't even imagine. you are a super trooper.
i didn't know that the church was opened up. or that it was flooded as well.
i do hope that this year's T-day was good.
Thank you for posting your weekly menus and stuff. i appreciate your help to get me more nurtitionally organized.
Hi December! It's a funny memory to look back on now, but it wasn't so funny then!!! However, we were really impressed that Jim was out here digging trenches on Thanksgiving day. I'm glad you like the menus and stuff!!!
H.
So sorry! That sucks! That would drive me crazy not to be able to wash anything or put the kids in the bath! Hopefully Christmas will go much more smoothly! How could it not with your kids already writing thank you cards to their dad for what Santa will bring them! lol so cute AND thoughtful :)
